Yves Saint Laurent Manifesto – Intuition Deprived of Substance

Fragrance Review

When I read (June 2012) about the upcoming launch of Manifesto, the newest feminine fragrance from , I was impressed by the story and I imagined that it could be the next big thing from this French house. Of course, the fact that was selected as its spokesperson could shape such a conclusion.

Then, in August 2012, Manifesto was launched (available in US barely in 2013) and I wished for sampling it, in order to see if the story matched the product. Finally, at the beginning of March 2012 I was able to get a first sniff, guided by the precious help of my wife (who, gentle as always, accepted to test the scent on her wrist).

Described on the official website as “the new declaration of femininity” and “an artistic declaration of audacity”, Manifesto represents an , developed by perfumers and . This over praised symbol of the feminine style encompasses listed notes of: bergamot and green notes in the beginning; Sambac jasmine, black currant and Lily-of-the-valley in the heart; and finally a base filled with accords of sensual woods (cedarwood and sandalwood), Tonka bean and vanilla.

As I was about to find out later on, there was nothing extraordinary about this new scent, or at least this is the way I see it. Subsequent to the top notes that burst with the citrus emitted mostly by bergamot, I was badly surprised by a strong sweet accord in the mid development therefore I was barely able to notice the dry down. On top of it, Manifesto remained very close to the skin, so you imagine that it should be applied generously.

The shape of the flacon looks whimsical as something that appears to replicate the silhouette of the woman’s body. Moreover, the color scheme tends to be dominated by a golden shade, present on both the cap and the rest of the bottle. Overall, I would label Manifesto as a scent reserved for the true fans of YSL, and offer you far better alternatives such as the iconic Opium and the more recent Elle.
