In the history of perfumery Opium is deemed by everybody as one iconic fragrance. As a result, with this kind of background, you can only presume that every new creation derived in some way or another from Opium, could only be something worth smelling, and ultimately deserving a spot in a “to buy” list. But, unexpectedly, to the chagrin of many Yves Saint Laurent fans, Belle D’Opium proves to be nothing more than precisely the type of flanker that renders them a bad reputation.
Introduced in August 2010 as a feminine oriental floral characterized by a subdued aroma of amber, with respect to the original, Belle D’Opium was developed by perfumers Honorine Blanc and Alberto Morillas. Sadly, after testing this feminine scent with the precious help of my wife, everything that remained in my olfactory memory is the sensual dance of French actress Melanie Thierry, chosen to front this fragrance.
The journey of a “next-generation” version of Opium (because the target audience was clearly stated by YSL) commences with a floral accord that transforms quickly into spicy facet, to finally dry down with a warmer woody note. The official list of notes encompass: Casablanca lily, sandalwood, gardenia, white pepper, jasmine and narguile (hookah in English – a type of waterpipe employed for smoking flavored tobacco, according to the description from Wikipedia). Moreover, Belle D’Opium is not even sustained by a better persistence, the value of this ranging below the standards.
The flacon that holds the liquid has a quadratic shape, as a reference to the bottle featured with the original Opium, is made from a glass that has a transparent enchanting blue nuance glass and features a golden ring in its middle, over which the brand and the perfume’s name is written. Overall, Belle D’Opium is a fragrance that might appeal to a very young clientele, the type that has not yet defined some distinct landmarks in perfumery.
