I’m not feeling sorry for the time (3 and a half years ago) when I purchased the debut fragrance from Sean John (a.k.a. Puffy, Puff Daddy, P. Diddy). However, what I do regret is the huge mistake I made, because as a consequence, I renounced to the acquisition of my “white whale”, Tom Ford For Men.
The fashion label named Sean John was established in 1998 by Sean Combs, who employed as source of inspiration his first and middle names. Later on, in an agreement signed with Estée Lauder, the first product, called Unforgivable, appeared on the market. This scent enjoyed a huge success from both public and critics (winner of FiFi Award Fragrance of the Year Men’s Luxe 2007). However, if I would be offered one more opportunity, in spite of the fact that Unforgivable is an excellent scent, I would go for Tom Ford without hesitation, because it totally reflects my preference.
Unforgivable was introduced in 2006 as an aromatic fougere masculine fragrance, developed by a team of 4 perfumers: David Appel, Pierre Negrin, Aurelien Guichard and Caroline Sabas. Reportedly a perfume fanatic, Sean Combs planned a fragrance built around “a combination of breathtaking, addictive, alioghtly dangerous scents”.
And the composition of Unforgivable managed to achieve this task superbly. The fragrance opens with pungent blend of Sicilian lemon and Morrocan tangerine, highlighted by the champagne accord. Then, in approximately half an hour the dry down reveals the Mediterranean air accords, in an elegant combination with iris, clary sage and lavender. In the dry down, the mixture of Tonka bean, amber, Cashmere wood, rum and Australian sandalwood creates a sensual trail.
The bottle that holds Unforgivable has a shape that was ‘inspired by Sean Comb’s favorite things: planes, yachts.’ The dark grey glass gets a little transparent to reveal the level of the liquid, while being topped by a cylindrical shaped stopper, reminiscent of gold. The video advertisement features Sean Combs, presented in a standard image of his behavior: enjoying the finest things in life and surrounded by beautiful girls.
