The moment I sniffed for the first time Black Orchid by Tom Ford, I instantly realized that I just founded the new perfume to be added in my wife’s collection. Redundant to say that her excitement was even bigger, hence I took the buying decision. Since at that time I wasn’t aware of the fact that I could buy it from the local Estée Lauder, I decided to buy it online. I don’t know about you, but I prefer buying my fragrances from the traditional perfumery stores (read Sephora!) in spite of the presumably better deals founded online, because to me it’s like reading a good book (not an e-book though!), the experience of entering a shop doesn’t match with anything. And due to the fact that Black Orchid wasn’t available online at that time, we settled for Black Orchid Voile de Fleur.
Launched in 2007, one year after its illustrious predecessor, this new fragrance from Tom Ford belongs to the same oriental floral olfactory group and was developed by perfumer David Apel. While being familiar with Black Orchid, we were enchanted by the exquisite combination present within the structure of this perfume (especially its heart!). Black Orchid Voile de Fleur opens with an easily detectable aroma of black truffle coupled with light floral accords; at the same stage ylang-ylang, bergamot and blackcurrant are joining the concoction. As the fragrance ages and reaches mid development, you will perceive its dominant black side: black orchid, black plum and black pepper, combined with honeysuckle, gardenia, lily and lotus wood. The base goes warmer and sensual with the mixture of fruity notes, milk, cinnamon, vanilla, patchouli, resins and sandalwood.
The image of Black Orchid Voile de Fleur reflects entirely the Tom Ford’s style. The bottle that holds the fragrance preserves the ribbed shaped glass from the original, except this time is all black (including the stopper), with the perfume’s name and brand written in golden letters over the black label’s surface. On the other side, the packaging box makes a fine contrast, because it’s all white, except the plate with the names that comes in black. As my wife’s bottle (50 ml!) it’s getting to a remaining volume of about a quarter, I’m planning to replenish it, or even better, buy her in fact Black Orchid, as originally intended.
