A perfume that’s been on my mind since the day I first sniffed it, Terre d’Hermès is a very distinctive signature fragrance introduced in 2006 and developed by the Hermes in-house perfumer, Jean-Claude Ellena. This woody spicy masculine fragrance possesses the capacity to captivate you from the moment of entering your olfactory area, through its remarkable accords of pepper. My first encounter with Terre d’Hermès happened four years ago, while taking my uncle to the airport for a business trip to Paris. He was wearing Terre d’Hermès that day and because I was fascinated by his cologne I knew it right away that I will test in a little while and sooner or later buy it.
I have always watched with interest every new launch from Hermès, but until that time their shared collection of fragrances did not convinced me. The French luxury goods house established in 1837 by Thierry Hermès was always famous for its leather products made with passion, while the extension in the perfumery field happened in 1951 with Eau d’Hermès, a shared fragrance created by Edmond Roudnitska. Although this fragrance remains one of the reference points in French perfumery, the appointment of Jean-Claude Ellena in 2004 as house perfumer of Hermès proved to be the winning move for their next launches.
The genius of Mr. Ellena is excellently embodied by Terre d’Hermès, the fourth Hermès fragrance dedicated to men, which already achieved the condition of a classic. Even tough the pepper is only present at the heart of the fragrance the first thing you will recognize upon smelling Terre d’Hermès is the aroma of spicy pepper. Terre d’Hermès opens with a blend of orange, grapefruit and flint, which are joined later in the mid development by a mixture of green pepper and pink pepper, imbued in patchouli and geranium leaves. The dry down reveals the woody notes from cedar, subdued by a combination of benzoin and vetiver that confer Terre d’Hermès a warm feeling.
The Earth (Terre is French for “Earth”) represents the source from which Terre d’Hermès extracts its energy and the blend of heaven into the composition is exquisitely evoked by the elegant bottle with rectangular shapes that holds the fragrance. The transparent glass reveals a liquid with pale brown color while being completed by the base that has the shape of the letter H, one of Hermès symbols. I had one chance to buy this excellent fragrance 4 years ago; sadly I turn it down and I’m still regretting, since Terre d’Hermès is probably one of the landmarks in perfumery from the last decade.
