At the beginning of this year, after discovering Histoires de Parfums and 1740 Marquis de Sade, my interest shifted totally to the niche perfumery. Then, in April I’ve discovered a genius, Andy Tauer and every perfume from his creations represents for me an occasion of overwhelming joy.
L’Air du Desert Marocain is so complex and after including it in my list of future acquisitions I decided that one more perfume based on incense should be the focus of my next article. As a result, last Saturday I sniffed No. V Incense Extreme, a shared oriental woody perfume introduced in 2007 and belonging to the “classics” line of Tauer Perfumes.
The words “incense” and “extreme” could lead into thinking that the final result is an overdosed aroma of incense that smells very “churchy”. Nothing could be further than the truth, because this is not Andy Tauer’s style. The structure of Incense Extreme revolves around incense, but, according to the description from the official website “it is translucent like the first whiff on incense smoke from Boswellia resin on red gleaming coal” and “crisp like a night in the desert”.
Incense Extreme starts off with a crispy note obtained from the combination of coriander and fresh petit grain. Then, it follows a heart imbued with beguiling accords of frankincense and subdued by the orris wood note. In the dry down and extreme dry down I perceived the complex and exquisite character of Incense Extreme; the listed base notes are dry woods and ambergris.
Incense Extreme comes in the new signature bottle from Tauer Perfumes, made from blue glass and easily recognizable by its pentagram shape, the rectangular stopper and the label “No. V” positioned on the upper left side. As a conclusion, after sniffing Incense Extreme, I decided that this fragrance deserves a place on my “to buy” list, next to Olibanum and Om. Unfortunately, only one of these fragrances will be the target on an acquisition, however only subsequent to completing the purchase of 1740 Marquis de Sade (set for this September) and L’Air du Desert Marocain.
