Lamentably for me and shameful as well, I was not familiar with Shiseido fragrances, until testing Zen for Men, their woody aromatic fragrance introduced in 2009. Therefore, I started to look for information related to this Japanese company, occasion on which I found out that the business was established in 1872 by Arinobu Fukuhara under the name Apothecary Shiseido. An interesting aspect is that regarding the source of inspiration for the name which was a classic Chinese text, Ching, in spite of its Japanese origins.
The first perfume of the house was a feminine fragrance bearing the name Zen, launched in 1965, not to be mistaken with a perfume with the same name from 2007. Nowadays, Shiseido owns several divisions, one of the most famous being Beaute Prestige International, producer of fragrances for Issey Miyake, Jean Paul Gaultier and Narciso Rodriguez.
Zen for Men arrived on the market 2 years after its feminine counterpart, being advertised with the tag line “the dynamic fragrance you share with every other living thing”. Upon testing it I perceived a classic, yet subtle fragrance, perfect for a man who adopts a minimalistic fashion style. This image is sustained by the perfume’s flask, which has a perfect cut shape that replicates a cube and is made from metallic blue-gray glass. The flask is topped by an oversized stopper in the same color scheme.
Zen for Men begins on an intoxicating mix of fruits that contains Kinkan (Japanese candied kumquats), bergamot and Nashi pear (a type of pear from Asia). Later, as the scent advances into its mid development phase, you will perceive a distinct aroma of violet, in a blend that contains as well rhododendron and spicy nutmeg. Subsequent to a couple of hours the dry down is revealed, in which patchouli is the dominant note, wrapped in elegant leather and sensual musk.
The video advertisement reflects the special character of this fragrance, which reportedly contains anti-stress elements which are used in aromatherapy. Overall, Zen for Men is an interesting fragrance, geared more at men above 35 years of age.
