I yearned to sample L’Eau Froide since the mid of November last year, when I read in the news about the upcoming launch from Mr. Lutens. Categorized as an aromatic spicy unisex, L’Eau Froide was introduced that very month as a second fragrance from the L’Eau series (belonging to the export line) with a name (French for “cold water”) that did not offer you much insight over the concept. The official listed notes employed by perfumer Christopher Sheldrake in order to embody Serge Lutens’ vision were Somalian incense, mint, vetiver, aquatic accord and musk and only the first accord aroused my interest right away.
Sadly, I did not perceive favorably this vision, not only due to the fact that I was expecting something else, let’s say more infused with incense, but also because of this scent behaviour. I think I’ve already accustomed you (or should I say fed you up?) with my abiding passion for incense (and my, which until this moment remains Olibanum from Profumum!), therefore you imagine that the aroma experienced by me in L’Eau Froide, I classified instantly as “big disappointment”.
And, to continue with my opinion on this, I’ll begin with the opening, which is a gentle aroma of citrus that tends to fade away quickly, while being replaced by a spicy facet that brings forward an aroma of mint and ginger. Then, it was time for the incense phase, which was subdued by a strong woody facet. L’Eau Froide exhibited a linear development and average persistence however it was different from the usual Serge Lutens trademark. Or at least this is how it seemed to me, probably because its connection to purity did not manage to offer me that emotion I’m always after in a perfume. Moreover, I read some good reviews of L’Eau Froide, therefore I suggest you to keep an open mind, far from being influenced by this post and try to sample the fragrance on your own.
With respect to packaging, the whole idea of clean shirt is suggested by a black and white color scheme that looks excellent and captures the concept in nice way.
