I imagined that, subsequent to my abiding quest for the perfect incense-based fragrance (which should become the next acquisition), I somehow managed to exhaust the topic. Then, my most recent discovery, 03.Apr.1968, proved to be one step further to the long-awaited response to this endeavor.
Introduced in summer 2012 as a unisex oriental woody, 03.Apr.1968 is the debut fragrance from Rundholz, a young avant-garde German fashion house founded by designers Carsten and Lenka Rundholz. After their first collection, which arrived on the market in 1993, the German designers needed seven years, in order to come up with such a mysterious and complex scent.
For this fragrant task Carsten and Lenka teamed up with an Italian perfumer, Arturetto Landi. The final result is, reportedly, a perfume named after Lenka Rundholz’s birth date, embodying her vision on “a fragrance you will rarely find”.
Developed by Arturetto Landi with a minimum amount of ingredients (three to be specific!), 03.Apr.1968 is a simple, yet such a complex fragrance. The combination of lychee and heliotrope from the top and respectively the heart notes, is brilliantly balanced by the incense (frankincense) employed for the base. Nevertheless, the recurrent theme for the perfume is perceivable from the initial five minutes and throughout the development stages I detected a fine accord of leather, which renders an aristocratic facet to this amazing sensation.
The presentation is unique as well: a black box evoking the packaging box suitable for a pencil, completed by a vial made from transparent glass and revealing an intense golden hue liquid. Characterized by the perfumer’s own words, 03.Apr.1968 is “An expressive fragrance, full of identity and character” and “a fragrance for extraordinary people”.
Overall, this fragrance convinced me, because following the sampling, 03.Apr.1968 just made it on top of my benchmark for incense, side by side with Olibanum. Contrasting with the latter, 03.Apr.1968 behaves very exotic, exhibiting at the same time the features of both gothic and Greek orthodox type of incenses (which, in the end, can only appeal to a true incense lover).
