I have a friend who was obsessed with Rocabar, and due to the fact that the perfume has grown to be hard to get by, he did not encounter it online. Therefore, last summer, as I was telling him that we are about to spend our holiday in Barcelona, he kindly asked me for a favor: to purchase him Rocabar on this occasion. As I could not imagine that it’s possible not to have on stock in the largest Sephora Store of the world (Sephora Triangle, Plaça de Catalunya, Barcelona), I was very surprised when they told me that I should search for it somewhere else.
So, there we were (me and my wife), in the rather new (opened in 2008!) Hermès store from Passeig de Gràcia, sampling Rocabar at last. What I have discovered that day was an exceptional perfume, which I would buy it for myself anytime (probably on our next trip, because the shopping experience there is unforgettable).
Rocabar arrived on the market in 1998, as a woody spicy fragrance, developed by perfumer Gilles Romey. According to the description from the official website, Rocabar is “A man’s fragrance, blending the best of the woods and the essence of freedom”. Tested on my wrist, Rocabar began its evolution with a pungent blend of bergamot, lemon, coriander and Artemisia. After no more than 30 minutes, the heart delivered a nice aroma of cardamom, combined with violet, orris and carnation. For the final part, the whole structure dried down to a musky base of patchouli, benzoin, vanilla, oakmoss and Canada balsam.
As a fragrance that evokes the tradition, Rocabar benefitted from 2 bottles during its 14 year history. The first one had a flat shape with a stopper that suggested a polo helmet. The current bottle is a re-interpretation of the contemporary shapes found in Hermès unisex perfumes, with perfectly cut shapes and transparent glass. Rocabar is a perfume for a man described by a classic style that sets him apart from the rest.
