Cartier, the famous French jeweler and watchmaker adventured in the perfumery territory in 1981 with Must de Cartier a perfume for women. It had always planned carefully its launches and in a certain way we might say that it bestowed upon them the unique and rare attributes of its jewelry making business.
Roadster was introduced by Cartier in 2008, as an aromatic fougere fragrance for men, developed by the one responsible for the creations, their in-house perfumer Mathilde Laurent. According to the description on the official website, this is “A fragrance imbued with distinguished masculinity and refined virility for a free, passionate man who knows what he likes. An exceptional stylish fragrance that masters the art of originality. Cartier reinterprets the ‘fern’ accord to seduce today’s dandies”.
To me, it’s seems that another source of inspiration (for the name at least), was the eponymous Cartier’s collection of watches, explained by the unusual shape of Roadster’s bottle. Manufactured from thick transparent glass and metal, the bottle has a stopper that suggests the knob for winding watches. One more interesting aspect is that the bottle may be positioned horizontally or vertically, however this is no novelty, since this concept had already been employed in 2000 by Lucien Baron with the bottle of Truth.
Roadster begins with a mixture of mint accords (spearmint) and citruses (bergamot). In the mid development, the mint is present again; the combination of peppermint and ozone creates an excessively refreshing feeling. Finally, for the trail, the situation changes, because the elegance of cashmere wood is infused with patchouli, cistus labdanum and vanilla. Overall, Roadster behaves like a pleasant fragrance, however not suitable in case you feel offended by its overdose of mint.
