One recent discovery that brightened the arrival of spring for me is the Catalan house of Ramon Monegal. Established in 2009 by the eponymous perfumer and based in Barcelona, this house went global in August 2012 with a line of fourteen fragrances. The complete information refers to the fact that Ramon Monegal is descendent of a family of perfumers with tradition in Barcelona and Spain, and besides the fourth generation of Myrurgia house’s founders, which is an official provider for the Spanish Royal Family.
Since I read the news related to Ramon Monegal, I realized I will have to sample Cuirelle and when I finally did it, I knew it was worth the shot. In my opinion, Cuirelle represents a very inspired take on leather, being, if you want, “Not the essence of leather, but the interpretation of it”, as I found it described on the official website.
That is why, during the test, I was impressed by its pleasant and unmistakable aroma of musk, coupled with soft tones of honey and “balanced with green cedar and vetiver grass” (quoted from the same source). The note that interested me from the start, in order to have it tested (of course, I’m talking about incense!) chipped in later, in the heart and mostly the dry down phases and was not overpowering (nor did I expected to be like that!).
Excerpted from the same official website, the list of notes is broad and includes: Somali incense, Indonesian patchouli, Bourbon vetiver, Virginia cedarwood, cinnamon, musk and bees wax. As for the people interested in all the details, Cuirelle is deemed as a masculine leather fragrance and was developed by perfumer Ramon Monegal himself.
Moreover, the bottle that contains Ramon Monegal’s essence is clearly indicating the literature as its source of inspiration given that the silhouette resembles with an inkwell. Made from transparent glass and with perfectly cut edges, this ensemble is fine completed by a large black stopper, adorned with a silver rim in the lower part. Overall, Cuirelle is that kind of leather that does not smell like the many perfumes associated to this note, and brings enough innovation in the realm of luxury perfumery.
