How do you define something that represents the very essence of that notion? There is no way I could talk about classic masculinity because Polo by Ralph Lauren defines the classicism in perfumery through its strong masculine character. Introduced by Ralph Lauren in 1978, as the second perfume of the house (the first was Lauren for women!), Polo is a woody chypre fragrance for men, developed by perfumer Carlos Benaim.
Even though it is extremely rare, I had the privilege of testing it in 2008 (30 years subsequent to its launch!) and it produced me a very pleasant surprise. Highly acclaimed by public and critics as well, for its exclusivist character, Polo distinguishes through the art of craftsmanship evoked in the tradition of the exclusive sport and the carefully selected materials.
The fragrance opens with spicy and citric accords, obtained from the combination of coriander and caraway with bergamot; in the top notes basil, juniper berries and Artemisia are added for a pleasant first encounter. Afterwards, the accords fade away slowly and are replaced by the elegant leather mixed with the spicy pepper and pine tree needles, everything wrapped in gentle floral accords, obtained from jasmine, geranium, rose, chamomile and carnation. In spite of the fact that I do not like carnation, its presence at this stage is not offensive. Moreover, the leather from the heart accompanies the development until the extreme dry down.
The base notes are mastered until perfection from notes of warm amber mixed with tobacco leaf and cedar, vetiver, oakmoss, musk and patchouli. The projection on the skin is extremely pleasant, leaving an intense trail responsible for an unprecedented sensation and it becomes clear why this essence has been popular for 34 years. The bottle of Polo exudes style, the transparent green glass with the big Polo logo brings to mind an activity reserved for a limited number of people.
Although Ralph Lauren introduced some interesting perfumes in the last couple of years, Polo and Polo Modern Reserve will always remain my favorite fragrances from this house.
