In 2008, for celebrating its 30 years of activity, the fashion house of Ralph Lauren introduced a special fragrance, called Polo Modern Reserve. And the selection could not possibly be better, because this woody essence, created by perfumer Carlos Benaim, designer of the two other past creations for Ralph Lauren, Polo and Polo Blue, represents the quintessence of what Ralph Lauren is today. Moreover, Polo Modern Reserve is intended to be a reinterpretation of the original Polo from 1978, alias Polo Green.
Testing this fragrance produced by Ralph Lauren (RL goes very well with my style) was not easy, because Polo Modern Reserve is hard to find. Fortunately, I had the privilege of testing it in the duty-free shop of an airport and since I couldn’t make up my mind in time, I didn’t buy it, which was, as you will see later, regrettably. But, since I was fortunate enough to sample the original Polo, back in 2008 (30 years after its launch!), you could say that I have done my homework when I state that Polo Modern Reserve has overcome its master. Some of the old ingredients were changed in a way that this new perfume transmits more; of course, Polo was also one of my favorites, but this special edition somehow managed to impress me more.
Polo Modern Reserve starts with notes of cardamom, freshly cut basil and pimento. This spicy combination feels very pleasant on the skin, and then the notes fade away, to be replaced by myrrh, vetiver and jasmine. In the dry down, the smell of woody notes combined with suede and a hum of patchouli is sheer pleasure. It is, admittedly, one of the classiest fragrances throughout the last years.
The bottle and the presentation encompass the heritage and tradition of this classic flagship of the American fashion. Having approximately the same shape as the original Polo bottle, the new creation looks better prepared to confront the future and the Polo’s logo would, most likely, fascinate the new generation of customers, an audience which was targeted from the beginning, as announced by the Ralph Lauren’s officials. Although I must warn you of one thing: you have to be a person that possesses style and class in order to feel attracted by Polo Modern Reserve and the values associated with this brand, since I’m pretty sure that the new generation of consumers will feel better represented by the current trend of the bling-bling culture, so excellent captured by Paco Rabanne’s 1 Million.
