Since more than 10 years ago, Ralph Lauren has become a reference for me, in a way that I love nearly all of their masculine creations, perhaps with minor exceptions. And given that the brand’s involvement in the perfumery business was more than inspired, I waited with impatience every new perfume launch.
Arrived on the market in September 2005, Polo Black is a masculine woody aromatic fragrance, developed by a team of perfumers from Givaudan: Ellen Molner and Pierre Negrin. And Polo Black is also a perfume which brings me back happy memories, because this was one of the fragrances that entered very rapidly in my perfume wardrobe, due to the fact that I bought it a couple of days after I got pleasantly impressed by the first sniff. Sadly, since that time, no matter how many times I tried, I never got a chance to re-new it in my collection.
Described on the official website with the attributes “modern, daring, sophisticated” and “a bold fusion of iced mango, silver armoise and patchouli noir”, Polo Black is a very interesting fragrance that deserves your attention in case you are looking for a modern classic.
The first aroma that you will detect after spraying a couple of whiffs on your skin is the already mentioned iced mango, coupled in the top notes with additional accords such as lemon, tangerine, water fruits, aldehydes, Spanish sage and green effervescent accord. Then, as the perfume begins to develop and slips into the mid development phase, a mild facet is unveiled, in order to balance the impetuous opening. The listed heart notes encompass calone, silver armoise, lush liquid accord and hedione. Anyway, I was not able to identify any of these aromas however it all became more obvious in the dry down, the final phase imbued with the sensuality of patchouli noir, offset by accords of sandalwood, timberol and Tonka bean.
The flacon that holds Polo Black is represented by Ralph Lauren’s signature bottle, this time made from opaque dark glass and topped by an elegant silver stopper. Adorning the frontal side is the famous polo player logo, which comes in matching silver hue. The video advertisement features the face of the fragrance, the Argentine polo player Nacho Figueras. Overall, Polo Black is the example of a true classic masculine fragrance, perfect in every detail and ideal for a man with taste.
