To be able to share with you my impressions on this special scent, I have to go back in time to the day I sampled it for the first time. The year was 2008 and back then, it did not succeed to capture my interest. Perhaps this got something to do with the fact that I was more focused on different types of perfumes at that time, but luckily for me, my opinion altered over time. As a result, I decided to grant it one more chance, and the result is history: I was captivated by it.
Obsession is an oriental woody fragrance for men, presented in 1986 by Calvin Klein, as a creation of the perfumer Bob Slattery. Every note in this essence turned into a classic and in my opinion Obsession was the source of inspiration for many current fragrances. The opening is constructed from citrus notes of lime, bergamot, Mandarin orange and lemon, mixed with spicy accords of coriander and cinnamon, and everything combined into the floral symphony found in lavender. In the mid development, the accords fade away slowly, to be replaced by another series of floral notes distilled from carnation, jasmine and sage, cleverly mixed with the elegance of Brazilian rosewood, on top of which were added nutmeg, pine tree and myrhh. This phase was completed with a hint of red berries. The base notes, obtained from the combination of vanilla, musk, patchouli, sandalwood, amber and vetiver, are responsible for generating a feeling of sheer delight. The whole structure derives its elegance from the recurrent themes of cinnamon and amber that turned Obsession and its feminine counterpart into one of the most popular fragrances of the 80’s period.
Obsession’s bottle was created by the designer Pierre Dinand and exhibits itself a form of art, with a combination of curves and chromatic that evokes masculinity in its pure form. The video ad is iconic, featuring the supermodel Kate Moss shot in black and white. Obsession reminds me of my childhood memories and conveys a good feeling and confidence.
