When I read about the upcoming launch of Black Afgano, imagined by Alessandro Gualtieri having cannabis as the main ingredient I was puzzled, partly because of his unorthodox choice, but mainly due to the perfume’s color, which was announced as dark. Imagine a stain of perfume that could last a couple of days and the official description according to which this scent “is the result of a quest to arouse the effects of temporary bliss”.
Black Afgano was introduced in the spring of 2009 and I managed to sniff it only a month later, thanks to the promptitude of our Intertrade retailer. Classified as woody aromatic, this unisex fragrance was built by Alessandro Gualtieri with only 3 ingredients: cannabis, incense and woodsy notes. I must confess that I do not know how cannabis smells like (nor I wish I would sample it, for that matter!), but the dominant note in Black Afgano is very different from what you have today on the market. Only the misunderstood genius mind of Gualtier, would have been capable of imagining something like that. I was told by the sales assistant from my favorite niche perfumery store that for the Milano premiere of this perfume, Mr. Gualtieri has brought a bowl from which everybody was encouraged to dip the hands and experience the aroma.
The bottle that holds Black Afgano has the classic Nasomatto look, explained in the official website by this: “This bottle of perfume is part of the Nasomatto project” while the composition is synthesized in one phrase “The fragrance aims to evoke the best quality of Hashish”. Overall, Black Afgano is an interesting fragrance, except of course not for everyone. If you’ll ask me, I will stick to Absinth, my personal favorite from Nasomatto. Who knows, maybe in the future I will buy Black Afgano. Life is full of surprises!
