Narciso Rodriguez is one of my favorite perfume houses (For Him Musk remains a genuine sensual and elegant creation for me!), therefore in March 2009, a couple of months after the introduction of Essence, I urged my wife on testing it. Different from the floral symphony perceived in For Her (which is still waiting to be acquired!), Essence is a distinct type if feminine floral fragrance, a creation of the perfumer Alberto Morillas.
According to the official website, Essence is described as “a mirror fragrance” and “a powdery, sensual and luminous fragrance”, and my conclusion that followed the test is that this is one of the most interesting perfumes based on musk launched in the last years.
Upon spraying the scent on my wife wrist, I was somewhat disappointed by its top notes, shaped from some airy accords that were not so pleasant. Then, in approximately 20 minutes, the heart of Essence was available, in a more interesting blend of iris and rose, which lasted a good while on her skin. Upon dry down, the exquisite combination of musk, amber and benzoin rendered the perfume with that special touch that I’ve perceived always in every Narciso Rodriguez creation.
The bottle that holds Essence was designed by Ross Lovegrove, an industrial designer, who is probably more famous for his work on the Sony Walkman design. In order to mimic the aforementioned concept of mirror effect, the interior of the glass was painted with metal, the result being a very futuristic product. As a fragrance based on musk, which represents the signature of Narciso Rodriguez’s scents, Essence is a pleasant feminine that will appeal the young women in search of a different approach on the rose theme.
