Towards the end of 2012 autumn, the world of perfumery witnessed the launch of two fresh perfumes: Cuir Velours and Bois d’Ascese from the Australian designer of hats Naomi Goodsir. At that time, while reading this news I was fascinated by the description of these essences, however I could not believed I was going to cherish them so much.
Later, to my sheer delight, the beginning of 2013 marked the moment of sniffing for the first time those special olfactory creations. Fascinated from the start by Bois d’Ascese, I imagined I was never able to take pleasure in the other scent with the same amount of enthusiasm. Well, I was wrong, because after Bois d’Ascese I sampled Cuir Velours and this also proved to be a total blast.
This leather unisex fragrance introduced in October 2012 and developed by perfumer Julien Rasquinet managed to put away from my olfactory memory the other classics I kept as a reference. From Houbigant’s Duc de Vervins (not much of a fan!) to Cuir by L.T. Piver, passing to Cuir Fetiche from Maitre Parfumeur et Gantier and reaching to Tom Ford’s Private Blend Tuscan Leather (my favorite from this entire record!), each and every one seemed to be forgotten. If in the official website Cuir Velours is dubbed as “oriental leather” and lists notes of leather, tobacco, rum, cistus labdanum, incense, fleur d’immortelle, I am convinced that for me, it was its exquisite combination between the notes of leather and incense that turned me into an unconditional fan.
From the beginning until the end this delight called Cuir Velours (French expression for “soft leather”) smells like leather, however it is a type of aroma juxtaposed to the rest of the fine ingredients that rendered this unprecedented harmony of accords. You are able to detect the rum, the tobacco and even a floral insinuation and above all these it is insinuated an accord of undermined incense. And, at the same time the air is dominated by the raw accord of leather that feels absolutely sensational on the skin.
Cuir Velours represents an opulent and luscious essence similar to the classic aromas of leather that used to be made in the 20th century. The recipient that holds this perfume is the signature bottle of the house. The easily likable and beautiful flacon feels good to hold in hand, which in this case, makes it similar to a comfortable leather jacket that you will adore putting on.
