Must de Cartier is “the first Cartier fragrance that broke with the tradition of perfumery”, according to the description from the official website. Arrived on the market in 1981, as a feminine oriental vanilla fragrance, Must de Cartier was reportedly developed in order to maintain the label bearing the same name, created at first for the Cartier line of accessories and jewelry.
Working with passion, the perfumer Jean-Jacques Diener managed to create a classic essence which reminds me of Obsession, in the way the both belong to the golden period of perfumery from the ‘80’s, not on the olfactory memory though. However, just like the fragrance from Calvin Klein, the structure of Must de Cartier is shaped from an abundance of ingredients that confer a beguiling aroma to the final result.
From the outset, Must de Cartier brings forward notes of green mandarin, pineapple, aldehydes, galbanum, lemon, bergamot, peach and Brazilian rosewood. The note that is evident at this phase is galbanum, replaced after a period of 15 to 20 minutes by a floral and sensual heart, which contains leather, carnation, musk, yellow narcissus, jasmine, orris root, orchid, neroli, vetiver, ylang-ylang and rose. After a couple of hours, the composition is balanced by a warm base shaped by the woody and animal accords and including notes of sandalwood, Tonka bean, amber, vanilla, vetiver and civet.
The flacon that holds Must de Cartier was inspired by the initial object that sported the Must label: a refillable gold lighter. The elegant flask is manufactured from transparent glass and reveals a liquid with a color similar to the white wine.
