The year was 2007 when one man’s passion for quality lead to the apparition of a new luxury perfume house, called By Kilian. This man was Kilian Hennessy, direct descendent of Richard Hennesy, the founder of the eponymous cognac company and this venture represented for him a way of maintaining the family tradition.
After being educated in one of the most prestigious universities in the world, CELSA (School of Higher Studies in the Information and Communication Sciences at the Sorbonne), Killian Hennessy manifested his interest in perfumery by authoring a paper on the “semantics of odors in search of a language common to gods and mortals” (according to the description from the official website). Later, he trained his nose working for the most famous perfume houses (Alexander McQueen, Giorgio Armani, Christian Dior and Paco Rabanne); therefore the decision to establish his own house came as a logical consequence.
His first collection was launched in the same year, bearing the name “L’Oeuvre Noire” (French “for Black Masterpiece”) which included 7 fragrances in the beginning, until reaching up to a total of 10, with the latest additions. You could imagine that, in light of this background, my interest for sampling Kilian’s creations was massive. As a result, I began my exploration by testing 2 scents: Liaisons Dangereuses and Cruel Intentions. The conclusion for the first one is detailed below.
Liaisons Dangereuses (subtitled “typical me” on the official website) happens to be a chypre fruity unisex fragrance developed by perfumer Calice Becker, who authored as well the majority of perfumes from this first collection. To spare you the excitement, I should confess that my first impression on Liaisons Dangereuses was not favorable. At least on me, this fragrance smells excessively sweet, a feature that I want to avoid in a perfume. Liaisons Dangereuses opens with fruity accords of plum, coconut, black current and peach, to finally dry down into a woody elegance that contains sandalwood, woodsy notes, musk and vetiver. Between these 2 phases, the mid development is spiced up with cinnamon and floral notes of rose and geranium, enveloped in the green ambrette.
The presentation features a stylish bottle, decorated with sculpted designs on the sides, exhibited in a box that may be locked using a key with tassels. Another interesting aspect is the fact that the entire formula of Liaisons Dangereuses is published freely on the official website, substantiated by a declaration of Kilian Hennessy in which he says that since only excessively expensive ingredients are employed in the manufacturing process, it turns into futile any act of replication.
Overall, Liaisons Dangereuses is a perfume that might suit you; it all depends on your taste.
