Back in 2008, I had a period that involved a lot of testing and one of the subjects of these sessions was Arpège Pour Homme. The masculine counterpart of the classic 1927’s Arpège, arrived on the market in 2005, under the olfactory category of the oriental woody fragrance. Developed by perfumer Olivier Pescheux, Arpège Pour Homme aims at continuing the tradition of its predecessor, even though there’s a 78 years gap that separates the two creations.
Looking for a new approach on the oriental notes, I sprayed my wrist with this scent, hoping that it will prove to be something interesting. I wasn’t disappointed, nor extremely pleased either. The construction of Arpège Pour Homme has a top, heart and base notes with a pleasant developing on the skin and the mystery that makes is desirable.
The fragrance starts off with a spicy-citrus blend of pink pepper, mandarin, bitter orange and neroli. The last 2 notes are quite persistent, however replaced quite fast (after 15 minutes or so) by a floral refreshing heart, made with accords of iris, jasmine, nutmeg and maté. Subsequent to a couple of hours, the dry down was perceivable, in a combination of patchouli, Tonka bean, vanilla, rare woods and Australian sandalwood.
Serge Mansau, the French designer famous for the creation of perfume bottles was responsible for the image of this fragrance. The bottle of Arpège Pour Homme represents an allusion to the classic spherical shape of Arpège, with a black circle adorning the transparency of the glass. The rectangular form of the flask is topped by a cap in the same color scheme as the already mentioned circle. Overall, Arpège Pour Homme is a well-behaved fragrance from a famous name in perfumery and nothing more.
