When you combine a famous fragrance house with an ugly bottle, a bad actress and a story that’s everything but original, the result is simple: Lancome Magnifique. “You are unique, you are magnifique” says the official website, but I was sad to find out that Magnifique lacks the style that define the elegance of Lancome.
Do not get me wrong, I am a fan of the brand with the black rose logo, but this woody floral musk fragrance for women, presented in 2008 happens to be the exact type of dull fragrance that could ruin your day. I was confused to find out that the perfumers Olivier Cresp and Jacques Cavallier were in charge of the creation team, because up to this point, I was used with only good things related to their work. The edifice of this scent is constructed from solely 3 ingredients, one for each phase. The top contains saffron, the heart features soft Rose, while the base introduces an uncommon ingredient, nagarmotha (known in English as cypriol).
The same official website talks about the chromatic selected for the image (red) in the following terms: “This intense and deep color is a symbol of passion and expresses an audacious woman”. Might be daring, but in my opinion Lancome could be better off alone, since the insipid actress Anne Hathaway, selected as the face for the ad campaign, does worse than good. It’s a shame that the capable Peter Lindbergh, German photographer and filmmaker was commissioned for the video campaign, since his talent got wasted when they decided the face of the product.
The ribbed bottle begins with transparent glass in the lower part to continue with different shades of red until the upper part; “Its absolutely contemporary bottle is facetted like a diamond and lights up with a captivating sparkle” says the official website, but with all due regret I feel that the image seems more like a cliché.
