It’s becoming increasingly clear that, in light of nowadays economic realities, the fragrance companies are trying to gain more attention from the consumers. This is what happens every year, with the fast increasing number of launches (from 101 in 1992 to 1330 in 2012!), a tendency imagined in order to support larger sales.
As a result, some “not so fresh” categories flourished: launches of perfume series with the same basic idea and minor tweaks, when compared against each other. From these series one fine example is Lacoste’s Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 collection, inaugurated in February 2011 with three aromas: Blanc, Bleu and Vert. Later on, December 2012 brought a new installment to the series: Rouge, however one fact remains, and this relates to their undermined ability of appeal (see Bleu!).
Now, the topic of this post is Vert, the “nature and well-being” element of this series (according to the press releases), in fact a citrus aromatic which came close to being (in my opinion!) the most interesting from the ensemble (behind Rouge, of course). The world of sports and the iconic polo shirt that inspired the fragrance were referenced both in the perfume’s packaging, designed to replicate “the chic simplicity and shape of the Lacoste L.12.12 polo shirt” (according to the description from the official website), but also in the video commercial, which insinuates the already classic shape of this garment.
As for the aromas that accompany the fabulous description, I perceived some interesting accords of citrus in the beginning that transformed later on into a hint of flowery facet. Much later (the scent exhibits an average persistence), the dry down shifted to a woody accord dominated by the warm and personal aroma of precious woods. The list of notes for Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Vert goes as follows: Italian bergamot, verbena, grapefruit, iced melon and ozone for the top notes; blue lavender, thyme, cardamom, birch leaf, violet leaf, fig and iris for the heart; and bamboo wood, guaiac wood, amber gris, sandalwood, cypress, teak and white cedar in the base notes.
Overall, Lacoste Eau de Lacoste L.12.12 Vert might be assimilated to a typical citrus fragrance with a woody twist, one that conveys a sentiment of relaxation and sporty freshness.
