Back in 2004, I got together with a friend that had recently returned from a visit to a Middle East country. Since he was passionate about his colognes and also because I liked the sillage of his scent, I asked him what he was wearing. The answer came puzzling: Black from Kenneth Cole. And he showed me later the bottle, which brought to my mind instantly the classic elegance.
Kenneth Cole, the American designer native from New York established his own house in 1982, with the name Kenneth Cole Productions, Inc. After 20 years, in 2002, the company debuted in the fragrance business through an arrangement with Coty, from which the first releases were Kenneth Cole for Men and its feminine counterpart, Kenneth Cole for Women.
Black was introduced in 2003 as a woody aromatic fragrance for men, developed by perfumers Harry Fremont and Sabine De Tscharner. This is actually the second masculine fragrance from Kenneth Cole, now reputed for the level of customization and functionality of his designs. As a result, Black is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the company, being a masculine scent of elegance in a innovative blend of incense, black suede and sensual woods.
Urged by my pall, I tested that day Black and from the first accords I was convinced that I should buy it immediately. Sadly, on his next trip, the perfume had disappeared from the shelves, so I focused my attention on something else. Sprayed on my wrist, the first notes of Black reminded me of mandarin orange and I could also detect the fresh ginger, in a mixture that contained also watermint and basil leaves. Next, in approximately half an hour, the intoxicating smell of incense (I adore the fragrances that contain incense!) shaped my decision; the heart encompassed also cedar leaf, nutmeg and lotus flower. And much later, the construction dried down to a sensuous trail of exotic woods, black suede, violet leaves, white musk and warm amber.
The first element that caught my attention, the bottle that holds Kenneth Cole Black represents a cylinder with a stylish shape. The black opaque glass evokes the incense from the composition, while contrasting with the white color of the brand that replicates the signature of Kenneth Cole. Overall, Black from Kenneth Cole is a sophisticated and sexy fragrance that reminds of an exquisite black garment.
