It is not unusual that every fragrance that I tested so far from John Varvatos, proved to be something much more compared to the rest of the mainstream scents and this is also valid for Vintage. Arrived on the market in 2006 and developed by Rodrigo Flores-Roux from Givaudan (the perfumer responsible for the majority of John Varvatos fragrances!), Vintage is a woody chypre masculine scent, intended as a “darker and [more] gentlemanly-like” version of the original, as described in the official press release.
After sniffing Artisan last summer in Barcelona El Prat Airport, together with John Varvatos for Women, last month offered me the occasion to sample the debut scent, John Varvatos for Men and with my latest test, Vintage, all that is left for me to sniff is Artisan Black. Therefore, in spite of the fact that Artisan still remains my favorite among John Varvatos releases, the subject of this post proved to be one remarkable member in this restricted category of the classic masculine fragrances.
The initial notes present in Vintage signify something that could be described as masculine sensuality, followed by a mid development which is comforting and a dry down that projects woody accords and a hint of vanilla over this entire construction. And on top of that, its persistence is great, as well as the sillage. Overall, Vintage is the type of perfume that is ideal if you love classic and sophisticated fragrances.
Vintage’s top notes are Moroccan coastal plants, rhubarb and quince paste; its heart is balsam fir, oakmoss, patchouli and floral notes; and its base notes are Tonka bean, precious woods, tobacco and suede. The flask that contains Vintage preserves the shapes from the original perfume, while introducing a detachable band with leather appearance, destined to exhibit the name of the perfume.
