The moment I read about the upcoming launch of a fragrance called Classique X from Jean Paul Gaultier, I knew it was going to be an alternative for Classique, the iconic scent which is one of my wife’s favorite scents. A flanker to 1993’s Classique, the new Classique X arrived on the market in January 2009 as a woody floral musk that “perfumes the skin as delicately as fine lingerie”, according to the description mentioned on the official website.
The fragrance was reportedly inspired by JPG’s Fall 2009 ready-to-wear collection and is re-interpreting the accords of wood and orange blossom, present in the original creation. I managed to sniff this perfume in March 2010, in Sephora, when my wife tested with enthusiasm on her skin (this time, there was no need to insist, given that she loves most of Gaultier’s scents!).
The test revealed an interesting fragrance which calms down the sometimes aggressive aroma from Classique and takes it to another level, which showcases a fresher and more airy edition. Instead of my imagined sultry version of the original, I perceived a sexy fragrance that starts off with a heady shot of citruses, thanks to the blend of mandarin orange and bergamot. Later, as Classique X was entering the mid development, a soft floral facet was unveiled, built from the note of orange blossom and a hint of rose. The final part of this perfume offers the combination of sweet vanilla, wrapped around the powdery iris and amber accords.
The bottle that holds Classique X has the iconic shape that replicates the sensual curves of a woman, except this time it was manufactured from frosted glass and has a transparent X, extended all over the flask. A pendant with the letter X is hanging around the bottle’s neck, while the unmistakable “tin can” packaging box is now painted in black and has the names written in a beige color scheme.
