The fragrance line from the Hugo label by Hugo Boss debuted in 1995 with the classic Hugo. Then, in 1999 followed Hugo Dark Blue and 6 years later, in 2005, Hugo Energise was introduced. Presented as a masculine woody aromatic fragrance, Hugo Energise was developed by perfumer Claude Dir. Sadly, or best said luckily for me, this represents another perfume in the long list of the ones that convinced me in the beginning, to consider an acquisition, however never completed it. The conclusion is that today, if I had to choose, I wouldn’t buy it.
And this got nothing to do with the perfume, but with the shift in taste over time. Hugo Energise embodies the concept of energy and with the mainly red chromatic, hence the inspiration for the name. The fragrance is aimed at the young man who needs a brake from the daily routine. As a consequence, Hugo Energise has become his daily shot of vitality.
The intense woody character of this fragrance is subdued by the aroma of cocoa bean. Hugo Energise opens with a good dosage of citrus, which I detected from the first contact with the fragrance. Besides the citrus accords, here you will recognize as well the essential spicy accord, in the blend of pink pepper and cardamom. Later, in approximately 30 minutes, the atmosphere changes and notes of coriander, ambrette, juniper and white freesia enter the stage. In the base, the jacaranda wood is combined with the exquisite Nubuck leather; notes of suede, black cocoa and amyris are added into the composition.
The shape of Hugo Energise’s bottle resembles a battery, while the transparent glass reveals a soft red hue liquid. In the video advertisement, the idea of energy buildup delivers the message of a relaxed, dynamic fragrance.
