As a fragrance that exhibits clearly the Hugo Boss DNA, Hugo Just Different does not set apart from the crowd, being no more than it pretends to be: a distinct and correct evening wear scent. Arrived on the market in June 2011 and fronted by American actor and director Jared Leto, Hugo Just Different is a masculine aromatic fougere and a flanker to 1995’s Hugo, described on the official website with the phrase “for the man who takes inspiration from everything around him”.
And because I’m still a fan of the classic Hugo (mostly due to its unmistakable aroma of apples!), I was curious to sniff this new creation. The opportunity arrived during one of my visits to Douglas, in search of the winter novelties, when I notice Hugo Just Different in the shelves and since I already failed in granting it with the proper attention at the time of its introduction I decided that I could no longer postpone the test.
The description I attached to the perfume name might lead you into thinking that my conclusion was not favorable however this is not the case, since Hugo Just Different delivers nicely for an evening fragrance. However, given that I’m constantly in search of scents that transmit more compared to the average perfumes, I thought the respective description matches the situation.
Hugo Just Different starts off with a powerful note of mint (listed as ice cold mint in the official notes!), joined quickly by a green facet, provided thanks to a combination between basil and a gentle freesia note. After no longer than thirty minutes, the woody accord kicks in and stays ‘till the end, as the cashmeran (a synthetic molecule, referred to as “blond woods” in perfumery) responsible for this manages to dominate the other notes present in the composition.
The flacon that holds the essence is re-inventing the medical-like shape from Hugo, this time painted in black in order to suggest the evening character of the fragrance. The video commercial features Jared Leto (as expected!), in an urban story that refers to the capacity of seeing the world in a different way. Overall, Hugo Just Different could be the ideal choice for an evening fragrance, provided that you are between 20 – 35 years of age. After that period, I tend to believe that you will no longer find it suitable.
