After sampling the previous fragrance from Histoires de Parfums (Music-Hall, Le parfum) and judging by the list of notes discovered at the time of reviewing the press release, I was expecting from Vici, one of the most recent fragrance from the Paris-based niche line, a more pronounced aroma of incense. Instead, I was delighted by a shared perfume perfectly wearable in almost all occasions that managed to focus its woody facets towards the end, in order to deliver a very powerful character, doubled by an exceptional persistence.
Announced in December 2012 as a trio that included also Veni and Vidi, Vici is a woody floral musk fragrance developed by the house’s founder and perfumer Gerald Ghislain. Drawing his inspiration from the famous quote attributed to Julius Caesar, who commented in relation to a short war with Pharnaces II of Pontus with the phrase: “Veni, vidi, vici” (“I came, I saw, I conqured”), Mr. Ghislain imagined this collection as a part of the Edition Rare range. According to the description from the official website, the trio of scents “epitomizes the excellence of success, e merited victory with an inherent sense of boldness, knowledge and achievement”. More specific Vici, the topic of this post, stands for fire, a symbol of passion and power.
Vici is, as it was always (until now!) the case with Histoires de Parfums, a remarkable fragrance that begins on a very discrete key, which is perceived as almost imperceptible in the initial ten minutes or so. Then, as Vici reaches its mid development, its olfactory structure veers towards a soft floral aroma, in which I detected the accord of iris. Far into dry down, it is featured a pure enchantment that represents an accord of incense combined with musk. Another aspect that I valued considerably is the fact that the incense lingers until extreme dry down, hence a persistence that qualifies Vici as an above the average fragrance. The list of notes for Vici goes like this: angelical roots, cardamom, pink pepper, basil, galbanum, aldehyde in the top notes; rustic lavender effects, célery graine, iris concrete, osmanthus absolute, essence incense for the heart; and patchouli oil, musk, vanilla, cedar and raspberry in the base notes.
Different from the image of the previous perfumes in the Edition Rare range, that sported a mainly silver color scheme, the packaging box and the bottle that holds this essence features an all golden hue, as a reminder of the ancient glory in the Roman Empire. Overall, Vici might qualify as the ideal fragrance for a brave man who settles for no less than victory in every circumstance.
