Subsequent to the discovery of 1740 Marquis de Sade (my favorite perfume at this time, and the one I will hopefully acquire in this late autumn!), Histoires de Parfums, the house founded by Gerald Ghislain, has turned into one of my favorites (after Andy Tauer, of course!). And due to the fact that I recently read a very interesting review on Petroleum, you imagine that I was looking forward to sniff this scent.
Luckily, the past Saturday, my expectation came to an end and I finally managed to test it. Petroleum is a woody aromatic unisex fragrance that belongs to the Edition Rare collection, which was introduced in 2011, together with Ambrarem and Rosam, all three developed by perfumer Gerald Ghislain. According to the tagline from the official website which mentions the phrase “a modern inception of oud” these three scents embody the olfactory genius of Mr. Ghislain, who employed the scarce and very expensive oud, combined with a blend of ingredients which is considered habitual in the conventional perfumery: petrol, rose and amber.
During this sampling, I realized that Petroleum is definitely made for special occasions and may or may not be used during the hot summer period of the year (depending on the person!). Oud is present in all the three phases of the olfactory pyramid and although the name would lead you into thinking that it is all about a dark fragrance, the impression is more of an exquisite aroma for the true “perfumistas”.
The first moment subsequent to applying 2 whiffs on my wrist, I was impressed by the strong and pleasant aroma of petrol, which continued to appear and disappear all over the development stages. Moreover, Petroleum exhibits a very good persistence, while the character of the scent is geared toward a rich and unusual facet. I would definitely buy it for my collection, however not in the near future (but this is only sustained by the fact that I have more pressing priorities).
Petroleum’s top notes are oud, bergamot and aldehyde; its heart is rose, oud and amber; while the base notes are oud, civet absolute, leather, patchouli and white musk. The flacon that holds Petroleum has the signature shape encountered in all of Histoires de Parfums scents collection, except this time the silver shade is dominating the color scheme.
