If someone would ask me one day to name my favorite niche perfumery house I will surely hesitate because there are so many original things in artisanal perfumery, however I’m sure that one of the first names that pop into my mind (after Andy Tauer and his Tauer Perfumes, of course) is, inevitably Histoires de Parfums. The nose of Gerald Ghislain is so fascinating and due to the fact that this perfumer created so many valuable aromas, I decided that I need to acquire at least three from his perfumes.
But, as always in these times of recession, it’s all about the economic factor that impedes me from turning this list into reality. So, for now, I will present you my most recent discovery, part of Edition Rare and called Ambrarem. Launched in 2011 and developed by perfumer Gerald Ghislain, Ambrarem is described on the official website as “animal oud” and the type of oriental woody perfume, suitable for both a man and a woman. The same source speaks about “an expression of desire and passion” and “a force of irresistibility that stirs the senses”, while all I could say is that I instantly loved Ambrarem, as soon as I laid it on my skin.
This fragrance qualifies for my future “to buy” list, dominated by 1740 Marquis de Sade, however on the last positions, immediately after Music-Hall, Le Parfum, the most recent creation from Mr. Ghislain. The moments that followed the application of this essence on my skin, I perceived a distinct aroma of herbal notes, softened later by the accord of amber, the theme of the scent. Although present on the official notes, oud is not what you would expect, lacking an aggressive facet, definitely due to the exquisite heart that placed this distinctive note close to saffron and iris absolute. The other combinations for the remaining two phases are pink peppercorn and elemi in the top notes and castoreum absolute, Bourbon vanilla, sandalwood and amber in the base notes.
The fragrance is available in the classic bottle with packaging that reminds of a book series in a library, having a color scheme that employs black, white and silver, and the usual persistence that became a trademark for Histoires de Parfums. Overall, I’ll dare to say that Ambrarem is one of the most interesting fragrances based on amber (if not the most!) available at this time on the market, which turns it into a requisite target for your future samplings.
