After being accustomed to the olfactory style of Jean-Claude Ellena (which captivated me only after Terre d’Hermès!) every fragrance introduced by Hermes prior to his arrival, represents for me an interesting quest. Eau des Merveilles arrived on the market in 2004, before the appointment of Jean-Claude Ellena as head perfumer for Hermes and on the official website is described as “an enchanting fragrance that encapsulates the spirit of wood, the memory of oceans and the sparkle of a constellation”.
This oriental woody feminine fragrance was developed by two perfumers Ralf Schwieger and Nathalie Feisthauer, who reportedly employed ambergris as their source of inspiration. The name of the fragrance is the French expression for “Water of Wonders” and its complex character of the dominant note is explained by an ability to have numerous facets: woody, dark, ambery.
Last year, when I asked my wife to sample Eau des Merveilles while we were in a Sephora store, I was impressed by its spicy opening, in which the pepper note was conspicuous, joined at the same time by a refreshing citrus and afterward by a woody accord. For me, this perfume tells a fairytale story and in shaping this image I admit I could have been influenced by the video commercial, however Eau de Merveilles is certainly a scent that does not leave you indifferent. The flacon that contains Eau des Merveilles has an interesting shape that allows it to be positioned on two sides (the bottom has the shape of a large “V” letter), while suggesting a type of toy appropriate for a stylish woman.
The listed notes for Eau des Merveilles include: elemi, bitter orange, Italian lemon, Indonesian pepper, pink pepper, ambergris accord, vetiver, oak, cedar, Peru balsam and Siam tears.
