When you are about to sample a perfume that made history, you feel that you want to live up to its fame and cross your fingers in order not to feel disappointed. For this instance, Samsara, one of the last from the classics designed by Jean-Paul Guerlain, has all that it took to make a powerful impression. Unfortunately, in my case, or should I say, over my wife’s skin, this fragrance was predictable (read OK!) while lacking the extraordinary facet that I imagined I will discover when I urged her to sample it.
Arrived on the market in October 1989 as an oriental woody, this creation envisaged by the grandson of Jacques Guerlain was born from the necessity to embody a location in which the most praised values are represented by serenity and harmony. Especially for this composition, Jean-Paul Guerlain employed sandalwood in its base notes (juxtaposed to accords of iris, Tonka bean and vanilla). Besides sandalwood, the other official listed notes were bergamot for the top and a mix of Indian jasmine, narcissus, rose and ylang ylang for the heart.
The slogan of this perfume was “a sense of serenity” and this also comes associated with the fact the word “Samsara” is the Sanskrit definition for the cycle of birth and rebirth, which reaches its final state in Nirvana. The flacon that holds the essence is made from transparent red glass and brings to mind the silhouette of a female Khmer dancer, while the selected color scheme represents the emblematic color of Buddhism. The video commercial is also related to the eastern religion, not only by the fact that the setting is represented by a temple, but also due to its tranquil atmosphere.
On the olfactory level, Samsara is remembered by its special concentration of sandalwood, which is said to reach 30% and the way in which this remarkable note couples with the Indian jasmine, bringing forward an individual and powerful character. The floral bouquet is completed by the accord of ylang ylang and the persistence on the skin is average. Overall, to conclude with the most eloquent description, the official website mentions that Samsara “is a voyage between East and West, Orient and Occident, an homage to the woman who is ever in search of serenity”.
