Gentlemen Only represents the most recent launch in masculine perfumery from Givenchy, since their 2005’s Very Irresistible. Although it was announced to arrive on the market in April 2013, I managed to get a sniff of it with one month in advance thanks to Sephora, which was kind enough to procure it faster and in exclusivity, of course.
As reported, this new perfume by Givenchy is related to the 1974’s Gentleman as its source of inspiration. As for the fragrance’s image, this comes coupled with the Australian actor and director Simon Baker, who borrowed his face to embody this fresh woody aromatic aroma. The video commercial that accompanies its arrival on the market depicts exactly the type of male character associated to this perfume.
But, in spite of all these beautiful descriptions, Gentlemen Only did not managed to impress me that much, hence the tagline from the title of this post. The scent is merely a pale aroma compared to the ones that made Givenchy famous in the past. Throughout is entire development stages, Gentlemen Only appears and smells very linear, with a highlight on the citrus notes from the beginning and followed later by the same accords all the way until mid development and dry down. The bottle that contains this fragrance is a re-interpretation of the theme presented almost 40 years ago with Gentleman, this time clearly updated for the current time. Characterized by classicism, this style is essential for those disturbed by the bling-bling that became quite a religion for some these days.
After testing Gentlemen Only, if I was asked to name my favorite perfume from Givenchy, I would certainly say Gentleman, the original… and perhaps Play or Play Intense for the torrid summer days. And the most disappointing would be, without a doubt, Very Irresistible. What about you? Which are your favorite and the one you’d rather avoid?
