At last, I managed to sniff Amarige, a true classic from Givenchy that was able to provide me with a very special feeling. I confess this was an unpardonable lack from my part (the thought of not being aware of this interesting olfactory creation until now), however the occasion added one more favorite scent in my wife’s short list with favorite fragrances.
Arrived on the market in 1991, as a feminine woody floral musk (or “floral woody amber” as it says in the official website), Amarige was developed by perfumer Dominique Ropion. The name of the perfume represents the anagram of the French word “marriage” and from the official description (“Amarige expresses the emotion of love at first sight”) you are able to guess that it’s all about a special fragrance.
Sadly, in my opinion this perfume did not receive all the deserved credits, while this remains unexplainable for me. For rendering a more accurate image of Amarige, I’m telling you that I coupled it with a great classic from the 80’s (read Obsession), which unfortunately have no correspondence on the market these days (except the 90’s Classique and the 2000’s Alien).
In order to deliver this type of classic perfume, Mr. Ropion employed a lot of ingredients in the composition of Amarige. The fruity opening from the first couple of minutes is later balanced by a floral bouquet in the mid development, to conclude with a warm base that sits nicely on the skin. The official notes are: peach, plum, orange, mandarin, rose wood and neroli for the top notes; mimosa, tuberose, gardenia, acacia and black currant in the heart; and musk, sandalwood, amber, vanilla, Tonka bean and cedar for the base notes.
One more aspect: according to the mention from the official website, the bottle of Amarige, “was inspired by a blouse once created by Hubert de Givenchy for his muse and style model, Bettina Graziella”. Overall, Amarige represents the type of wealthy and complex fragrance, perfect for a woman in search of a classic to please her nostrils.
