When I reviewed 2009’s L’Humaniste from Frapin, I thought this was nothing more than a niche house which produced perfumes with a limited persistence (at least on my skin, this one exhibited an incredible low lasting power and minimal sillage!). Then, I had the chance to sniff Speakeasy, the most recent scent launched by the famous French cognac house, and one way or another my initial theory was loosing ground.
Speakeasy is a unisex oriental woody, arrived on the market in October 2012 and developed by perfumer Marc-Antoine Corticchiato, the man who founded Parfum d’Empire (A French niche line established in 2003). The list of official notes founded in this perfume is impressive (Rum extract, Indian davana, sweet Italian orange, Brazilian fizzy lime, cold Russian mint, Egyptian geranium, oriental leather accord, ciste absolute, labdanum absolute, styrax essence, Turkish tobacco, tobacco absolute, liatrix absolute, everlasting flower absolute, Tonka bean absolute and white musk), however, in spite of that, the fragrance conveys a simplicity that’s synonymous with genuine elegance.
Most probably, this is also related to the scent’s name because reportedly “speak easy” were the words whispered to clientele of the illegal bars, during the period of Prohibition, hence the discreet character of this essence. The olfactory construction in Speakeasy begins in a barely perceptible manner, given that in the first 30 minutes I felt that the fragrance stayed very close to the skin. Then, in its mid development and especially the dry down phase, the tobacco facet is combined with a smooth leather accord, in a way that makes you meditate on an acquisition. Full of undermined sensuality, Speakeasy exhibits also a good lasting power, for more than the usual time frame of 10 hours.
The flacon that holds the fragrance is Frapin’s signature bottle, bringing to mind the company heritage in cognac making business. The liquid has a beige hue, excellently complemented by the wooden stopper that tops the elegant bottle. Overall, Speakeasy is a scent that sends out a message regarding the person that wears, and the significance of this communication relates to a superb sense of fashion.
