Fragrance Review

My first olfactory contact with was by way of L’Humaniste, which, sadly, turned out to be unsatisfactory (at least from my point of view!). Then, to my surprise I discovered Speakeasy and things began to look nicer.

Moving on to this chapter, my most recent revelation is 1697, a masculine launched in 2011 and perfectly capable to honor the reputation of this French house, known for their famous brand of Cognac. According to the description found on Frapin’s official website, the name of 1697 came as a reference to the year in which the French King “Louis XIV gave his apothecary the right to bear a coat of arms”.

Developed by perfumer , 1697 shines through its capacity to convert the aromas of Cognac into a special perfume. The fragrance starts with a pungent accord of alcohol, balanced with a couple of spicy notes. Then, as the top notes evaporate, you will be able to identify clearly the heart filled with elegant patchouli and a floral facet that attaches a warm feeling to the fragrance. The final part is reserved for a couple of accords that pervade enough on the skin, hence its great persistence.

As for the list of notes, this is very comprehensive and encompasses: Cabreuva, davana, Jamaican rum, cistus, pink pepper, jasmine sambac, hawthorn, ylang ylang, clove, cinnamon, dried fruit, rose, ambergris, Tonka bean, , patchouli, cedar, white musk, vanilla. The essence was contained in Frapin’s signature flask, having a silhouette that reminds of a Cognac bottle and topped by a wooden stopper. The bottle was manufactured from a transparent glass and exhibits the same hue as that of the “precious liquid”. Overall, 1697 and Speakeasy represent two fine choices for the people who became tired of the common fragrances in their wardrobe.
