There was a time when you could smell Fahrenheit on everybody and this is also true these days. And, even tough this woody floral musk introduced in 1998 is not on my favorite list, I must admit that it is a legendary fragrance that earned its spot in the heart of perfume fans.
Imagined as a fusion between earth and water, Fahrenheit was designed by Jean-Louis Sieuzac and Maurice Roger, like a scent with a contemporary chypre note. The combination of ingredients is classic, the introduction being reserved for bergamot, chamomile, lemon, lavender and mandarin orange, while the middle notes combine cedar, jasmine, violet leaf and sandalwood. One might say that is quite unusual the presence of sandalwood in the middle notes, but this was planned as something extraordinary because the base notes are represented by a mix of leather, vetiver, musk amber and patchouli, conferring this earthy perfume an unmistakable signature. One of the two aromas that are dominating the fragrance is petroleum which can be sensed in the middle notes and upon dry-down, the other one being the leather which indicates masculinity in the base notes.
The bottle is suggestive, continuing the fusion theme with the selected chromatic. The bottom exhibits a color built from sunny shades, continues with red tones in the middle and ends in complete darkness with a deep black color. The image of the bottle evokes a beautiful sunrise in a summer morning, as if the rays of the sun were responsible for melting the earth in order to come up with this unique scent.
At the time of its launch, Dior presented a video ad for Fahrenheit which featured an active man who was walking. You can guess that the man who wears Fahrenheit desires to be unbound and is prepared to travel until the worlds end in order to find his ideal. And this journey ends in a happy note, because Fahrenheit became one of the ten best seller perfumes ever.
