The month I read about an upcoming launch from Dolce&Gabbana was November 2012 and seeing that this particular perfume was announced for January 2013, I forgot about it in a couple of days. Then, in March 2013, browsing the shelves with novelties at Sephora, I stumble upon a black bottle, so I asked my wife to help me again with the test.
From the start I should tell you that we both enjoyed the original The One, and although it made it on her “to buy” list, we never reach to buy it. Having this in mind, I could not imagine what might possibly be needed to re-invent, from a perfume that was already fine. But, the opportunity was there, so I started to analyze this flanker to 2006’s The One.
According to Dolce&Gabbana’s official website, the new perfume “is an Oriental Floral that completes The One collection with a bouquet of intense and intoxicating notes to create an opulent and deeply feminine fragrance”. And I’m happy to inform you that my conclusion pretty much matched the description.
The opening in The One Desire is balanced between some fresh accords of citruses (mandarin, lychee and bergamot) coupled with a floral facet (Lily-of-the-valley). This sensation was so refreshing that I wished it could last longer. Then, as the top notes subside, an intense heart began to play with my olfactory senses. The notes employed for this stage came from a combination of Madonna lily, Indian tuberose, velvety jasmine and sweet plum nectar. Much later, in the final part, the base was infused with some sweet accords of vanilla, mixed in sensual sandalwood and a hint of musk and Cistus labdanum.
The flacon containing the essence represents a reinterpretation of the signature silhouette from the original The One, this time made from opaque black glass and adorned with a matte gold hue stopper. For a touch of class, the front side and the packaging box featured “Stefano Gabbana’s elegant handwriting of “Desire” in gold lettering”.
With respect to the advertising campaign, the American fashion photographer Terry Richardson was commissioned. And Scarlett Johansson was selected, once again as the fragrance’s image, to embody the archetype of woman promoted by Dolce&Gabbana. Or, better said, with Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana’s own words: “Scarlett was a natural choice for us. Not only for her beauty, which is well known, but for her ability to interpret the many sides of our woman.”
Overall, The One Desire is an excellent fragrance that will please the fans of the original perfume and it will acquire also a fair share of appreciation from the young generation.
