The first major launch of a men line made by Dior since the classic Dune from 1997, Dior Homme was introduced in 2005 as a woody floral musk fragrance, developed by perfumer Olivier Polge. This composition delivers a classical structure based on the dominant note of iris. Being an unusual note in men’s perfumes (the other 2 classic are Azzaro pour Homme from 1978 and Green Irish Tweed by Creed, from 1985) the iris confers this fragrance a woody, powdery floral aroma.
The image that I associated with Dior Homme, upon the testing that followed soon after its launch, is that of a modern classic, designed for a powerful man with charisma. The fragrance conveys upon the person that wears it a presence that’s difficult to avoid.
The opening of Dior Homme mixes sage, lavender and bergamot for an aromatic sensation. Then, as the notes vanish in less than one hour, you will detect the iris note mixed in cocoa and wrapped around warm amber. They all eventually dry down to a powdery trail, composed of Haitian vetiver, Indonesian patchouli and elegant leather.
The bottle of Dior Homme exudes a minimalistic image, with a luxury touch. The rectangular transparent glass reveals a liquid with a pale amber hue, having a steel cylinder that pierces through it. The stopper, which is also transparent, adds elegance to the image.
For such a classic scent there would have to be a similar video commercial. The short film (approximately 5 minutes and 10 seconds) is called “Un Rendez Vous” and was shot in Paris by famous English director Guy Ritchie, starring the face of Dior Homme, British actor Jude Law and Slovak model Michaela Kocianová. The title of the film is probably a tribute to the short film “C’était un Rendezvous” made in 1976 by Claude Lelouch, involving a high speed drive throughout Paris.
