Should you’re after a fresh masculine perfume that needs to came from a famous house and does not differentiate much from the crowd, then Dior Higher Energy could be a choice as good as any other. This scent was presented in 2003, as a flanker to 2001’s Higher and represents a woody aromatic, developed by a team of 2 perfumers: Nathalie Gracia-Cetto and Carlos Vinals.
My story goes like this: since this was one of the few masculine perfumes from Dior that I did not tested yet, on a recent visit to Sephora I decided to give it a try. Sadly, my conclusion is not so comforting, but then again, I’m not what you might call a “Dior fan”. So, in the next couple of lines, you will find out my impressions on this masculine perfume.
According to the description from the official website, Higher Energy is imagined as “A young, urban fragrance, created for the man who is always open to new perspectives and horizons, composed around a harmony of fresh, woody and spicy notes of grapefruit, pepper and vetiver”. Well, at least for the final part, I was able to identify all the notes mentioned in there, but, in spite if my capacity that allows me to opening for new things, I could not distinguish any new perspectives in Higher Energy.
I’m not saying that this is a bad perfumes, it simply does not posses originality. The first accords are shaped around the note of grapefruit, juxtaposed to a combination of pineapple, melon, juniper berries and mint. Then, as Higher Energy enters its mid development phase, the spicy accord of black pepper begins to make us aware of its presence, highlighted by additional notes of nutmeg and incense (I could not detect it, but anyway!). Finally, the last part brings forward an elegant note of vetiver, mixed with accords of labdanum, sandalwood, musk, oakmoss and cedar. So, what is called officially “luminous and vibrant”, I would rather identify as “dull and languid”.
The bottle that holds Higher Energy reprises the silhouette from its precedent apparition, except this time, instead of an opaque flacon there is a crystal clear glass that allows us to observe the pale green hue of the liquid. The video advertisement accentuates the idea of “urban fragrance” in a black and white short film meant to convey the concept for this fragrance.
