Diane von Furstenberg launched Diane in 2011 as a floral woody musk fragrance for women, developed by perfumer Aurelien Guichard from Givaudan under the license of ID Beauty. According to a Diane’s statement for Women’s Wear Daily (WWD), “I wanted to put the power of a woman in a bottle. I feel like in the past 10 years people have forgotten the magic that a perfume can have, and the power that it has. And therefore, I definitely wanted to do something powerful and seductive, without being agressive”.
And because Diane von Furstenberg does not favor the fruit notes in the perfumes, the composition is centered on 2 main elements that are contrasting to each other: Frangipani blossom and violet. I never had any intention to test Diane, nor wrote about it, until my wife received a couple of samples in a Sephora store. And from the first spray on her skin, we were disappointed.
The structure of Diane does not follow the usual pyramid with top, heart and base notes, being a floral scent from beginning till the end. The listed ingredients are: musk, patchouli, myrhh, violet and frangipani blossom, however the sensation of floral that I mentioned earlier accompanied me throughout its entire development phase. The bottle is meant to evoke the luxury for which the DVF brand has become famous, the golden color of the glass, having the transparent portion in the middle is interesting, but I’m afraid this is all that’s worth mentioning about Diane.
Because on paper all the marketing strategy and the positioning of the products might look brilliant, but it’s the final result that counts and I’m sorry to say that Diane leaves me indifferent. It is the kind of scent that does not differentiate itself from the flood of launches that invades the market every year, a pleaser if you want a perfume that vanishes in a couple of hours subsequent to its application.
