A couple of months ago, I watched a video interview with Chandler Burr, in which among other things, he mentioned one of his favorites perfumes: Comme des Garcons 2 Man. Back then, I was not familiar with this brand (nor am I today, in spite of the 3 fragrances tested!), but what motivated me to consider sniffing it was the list of ingredients. Coming after one more fragrance from Comme des Garcons selected for a test, (Avignon) I imagined that one more perfume having incense as constituent note would not do any harm.
2 Man was developed by perfumer Mark Buxton and introduced in 2004, five years subsequent to another interesting creation from the same house, 1999’s 2. Deemed as a unisex woody chypre and described on the official website with the tagline “A worker, a man who loves his work… ” 2 Man was, to begin with, a pleasant surprise.
Given that I was expected a complex fragrance, this was exactly what I received, following the test. The opening of 2 Man is fresh, balancing accords of citrus and other fruits with some green accords. Then, the mid development replaced the onset with some floral facet that created a beguiling atmosphere. In the final part, it was revealed the essence of 2 Man, since after a couple of hours, 2 Man dried down on my skin into something that I could describe as a pleasant smell of old books combined with the warm reassurance of wood. It felt like I was transported into an erudite universe, reserved for the truly knowledgeable.
The list of notes included incense, white smoke, saffron flowers, nutmeg, kumquat, fresh crinkly mint, vetiver roots, mahogany wood and leather, while the flacon that contains the essence was represented by Comme des Garcons’ signature bottle, made from a transparent brown colored glass and topped by an elegant black stopper. Overall, this is the fragrance of a man that has certain knowledge about perfumery, and does not afford to leave things randomly.
