The mini holiday experienced in the past 4 days has offered me the opportunity to re-discover a genuine classic: Chanel Pour Monsieur. It all began while reading a review the other week, in which I noted this scent mentioned alongside the tag citrus and given that my former propensity towards citrus perfumes, from there until testing it was only a matter of going to Sephora.
The result of my test is expected (I’m a fan of the fragrances that deserve to be called “classic” when referred to): Chanel Pour Monsieur emerges as my new favorite from Chanel. Of course, I’m still interested in Antaeus and continuing to contemplate a future acquisition, however Pour Monsieur comes as an extremely complex fragrance, dedicated to a man with an authentic classic fashion style.
Chanel Pour Monsieur was introduced in 1955 as a creation of perfumer Henri Robert and although classified in the citrus aromatic category, restricting its classification to this category would make a terrible injustice. Because this fragrance has an incredible multifaceted structure that reveals in time, surprising with each new note that is developing on your skin. The opening in Pour Monsieur is refreshing, containing Sicilian lemon, neroli from Grasse, verbena and orange. Shifting to mid development, the scent turns spicy, although I detected a hint of leather. The notes included in here are coriander, ginger, cardamom and basil. Continuing a couple of hours later, the leathery note is perceived as well in the dry down, together with a blend of Virginia cedar wood, vetiver and patchouli.
The bottle of Chanel Pour Monsieur oozes “timeless elegance”, according to the tagline used in the official website. The shape is typical Chanel (used again for Antaeus 26 years later, in 1981) the glass is transparent and the liquid’s color is soft yellow, reminding of the citrus component. If Antaeus symbolizes a power and restrained elegance, Chanel Pour Monsieur stands for the definition of a gentleman, in an iconic elegance, the type that (unfortunately!) is hard to notice these days.
