Chanel Egoiste Review
The first major launch from Chanel since 1981’s Antaeus, Egoiste is a fragrance with a surprising character, which arrived on the market in 1990. And because it is a classic and also one of Jacques Polge’s creations I was looking forward to test it and the other day, I reached an interesting conclusion.
The first accords of Egoiste seemed, unexpectedly, very dull. I guess it was the combination of coriander, Brazilian Rosewood, mahogany and Sicilian mandarin or maybe I’m too fanatical for the top notes constructed around citruses, but the beginning of the olfactory journey was quite disappointing.
Some minutes later, the Bulgarian rose combined with warm cinnamon and carnation convinced me that Egoiste deserves my attention. The scent turned warmer and the attraction started to grow stronger. It was then when I realized that I was in front of a memorable creation. The woody character was afterward revealed with the base notes that were releasing slowly the accords of amber, tobacco, vanilla, sandalwood and vetiver. The sandalwood found on the final notes is what is confers the perfume character.
The bottle of the perfume indicates elegance to the least detail, which is a characteristic for every Chanel perfume. The stopper is black, in contrast with the white color of the liquid and alongside the black package writes a symphony in black and white. The stopper reminds in fact of the burned wood and this is very interesting, since this fragrance was initially launched in the United States as a limited edition called “Bois Noir” (Black Wood), back in 1987.
I could declare without hesitation that this woody spicy fragrance is reserved for the traditional and independent man, who does not handle surprises and lives a life according to his own rules. This is a very masculine perfume with a distinctive fresh theme that conveys a powerful image around it.
