Launched by Chanel in 2003, Chance, which is French for “Luck” is a chypre floral fragrance for women, developed by their in-house perfumer, Jacques Polge. Advertised on the official website as “The decidedly young scent for those women who dare to dream”, Chance is aimed at the new generation, with the clear intention to appeal the larger masses. Its suggestive name, Chance, that’s contrasting with the fabulous brand’s name comes as no coincidence, since “They were made for each other” for “the relationship between Chanel and Chance goes back a long way”.
The construction of Chance follows some surprising mixtures and associations: intoxicating freshness collides with flowery notes and blends with the sensual and spicy elements. Moreover, given that Jacques Polge wanted to extend the contrasting character of Chance, this is (until now!) the only scent that was presented in a round bottle, totally different from the usual rectangular bottles which hold the Chanel fragrances. This details was interpreted as a ‘wheel of fortune’ because “Chance is a tornado… the door open to adventure and unknown, just like lips ready for kiss” (from the official statements). The round bottle evokes the sensation of a playful scent, like the temperament of Chance’s heroine, a young woman who lives by taking her chances in life.
Chance opens with a pleasant combination of lemon and pink pepper that announces the arrival of soft flowery notes. The hyacinth, jasmine and iris that structure the heart dry down in a little more than half an hour to a trail constructed with white musk, vetiver and patchouli, everything wrapped in warm amber. The video commercial was directed by famous advertising film director Jean-Paul Goude and invokes the part of luck in finding the right love partner.
