This scent is a living legend. Antaeus is the second masculine fragrance developed by Chanel and definitely one of the best male fragrances ever made. Introduced in 1981 and belonging to the woody chypre olfactory group, Antaeus was developed by the famous Chanel house perfumer, Jacques Polge. The source of inspiration for the scent relies in the Greek mythology, in which the character with eponymous name was a half-giant Demigod, son of Poseidon (god of the sea) and Gaia (Earth goddess). The legend claims that Antaeus was defeated by Hercules, because he was deficient in both power and a human facet: the poetry.
However, Antaeus, the perfume is nothing but powerless. This fragrance is magnetizing you from the first encounter. I tested it two years ago, more from curiosity reasons and I was instantly impressed by its strong presence. I could not believe that I overlooked it for such a long time. Like its illustrious predecessor, the fragrance draws its energy from the earthly elements, the herbal and earthy accords are captivating enough to transform this object of passion into a sincere adoration.
The opening of Antaeus is an interesting blend of coriander, myrrh and clary sage and added citrus accords of lime, Amalfi lemon and bergamot. Then, in the mid development, the soft floral notes of Rose, thyme and jasmine are combined with jasmine. Finally, the dry down encompasses castoreum and leather for a strong animalistic touch, later mixed with oakmoss, patchouli and French labdanum.
The bottle that holds Antaeus represents a lesson of design, in which the elegant and slim silhouette of the black opaque glass is beautifully highlighted by red color of the packaging box. The video advertisement of Antaeus emphasizes the mythology story, by placing the spotlight upon the theme of water and earth.
Even tough I heard some people classifying Antaeus as an “old fashioned”, this scent unveiled to me as a memorable olfactory pleasure that defines the classic masculine style in perfumery.
