Cerruti 1881 Men was introduced in 1990 as a masculine aromatic fougere fragrance, developed by perfumer Martin Gras. The year 1881 in the fragrance’s name represents a landmark for Cerruti, because this was the year in which the family textile business was founded.
14 years after its launch, in 2004, I managed to sample 1881 Men on my wrist during a visit to a Sephora store. And I liked the scent so much that I thought of an acquisition. In the end, I bought instead Escape Men from Calvin Klein. However, the construction of 1881 Men will always remains for me as a true classic, which is appropriate for almost any occasion.
1881 Men begins on a pungent blend of blackcurrant (a premiere, at that time, in a masculine fragrance!), cypress and bergamot. After no more than 20 minutes, the heart follows with an unusual note for a mid development patchouli (employed mainly in the dry down) and ylang-ylang. Subsequent to a couple of hours, the base reveals a woody facet, built from sandalwood, pine and oakmoss.
1881 comes in a bottle that’s manufactured from frosted glass, with mineral touches, while the pale green color scheme evokes the relation with nature. On the surface of the glass, the name 1881 appears embossed, which constitutes an elegant touch. The description from the Cerruti’s official website mentions the target for the fragrance as “A man with potent charm and style, combining Italian elegance and French sophistication.”
