Byredo is a Stockholm based niche perfume house, started by Ben Gorham in 2006. The name refers to the expression “by redolence” and is meant to capture the essence of simplicity by using uncomplicated recipes and the most precious raw materials.
Belonging to the oriental woody olfactory group, Bal D’Afrique is an unisex fragrance introduced in 2009. The scent was designed by perfumer Jerome Epinette to capture the essence of an African party in the city of fashion, Paris. On a deeper level, this scent might be considered a combination between the modernity of Paris and the traditions found in African culture, beautifully exploited for this olfactory pleasure.
From the begging you feel nothing but fascination for this perfume. Bal D’Afrique begins with accords of bergamot, Amalfi lemon, neroli, African orange flower and bucchu, after which you are conveyed slowly into the flowery worlds perfectly suggested by the notes of cyclamen, jasmine petals and violet. The base notes are represented by mixture of black amber, musk, vetiver and Moroccan cedarwood. All these ingredients are carefully combined in order to generate that sensation that captivates you. The connection with Africa is strong, both in the ingredients level, represented by Moroccan cedarwood, neroli and African marigold, but also on the perfume’s image, which has, like all the products that bear the Byredo trademark, a black and white image.
When you analyze the bottle, you discover the typical round shape, encountered in every Byredo fragrance; the only aspect that differs is the perfume’s name on the label. The bottle’s shape suggests an ink pot; most likely this was intended as homage to the black and white theme. One more interesting detail is that all the products do not contain paraben and are manufactured in Sweden.
